PATH AUDITS VS ONE-FOLD GRADERS

A landing page grade is not a funnel

Published:

A landing page grade scores the URL you landed on. A funnel is the ordered public path after the click — signup, checkout, thank-you. If step 3 undoes the hero, a fold grade cannot see it. The cash path is the $19 page file. Not GA4. Not a logged-in crawl. The sample is a composite. Evergreen comparison: Path vs one-fold graders. Spine: What is a conversion path audit?.

Why this leak

Operators buy a landing-page grade because that is the object they can paste in five seconds. One URL. One fold. One letter. Then they ship a hero rewrite and watch CPA. The visitor who converted in the model still has to create an account, survive pricing, and finish checkout. That is a different object.

A fold grade is honest about the page it saw. It is silent about:

  • The CTA that said “Start free trial” and landed on a calendar.
  • The price that appeared after the card form.
  • The thank-you page that opened a second filled primary.
  • The login wall that sat between pricing and pay.

None of those leaks live in the first viewport. NN/g’s 3-step CTA is verb + what happens next. Across a path, “what happens next” is a URL. If you never submitted that URL, the grader never looked.

Analytics people reach for GA4 drop-off here. That is a real product. It is not this product. We do not ingest sessions. We do not crawl. One landing page is enough. Add checkout if it is a public URL. Mixed hosts are fine. A login wall is a finding, not a bypass.

Roast galleries fail the same way for a louder reason: they never leave the screenshot. Overnight PDFs fail when they are five page teardowns stapled together. Five landing-page grades still cannot see checkout. If the file does not name where conversion dies, you paid for tabs.

Classic break pattern (illustrative, not a customer story): pricing sells “Start free trial,” Stripe takes the card, /welcome asks for a product tour. The break is welcome. That pattern is why a strong lander grade can still be a dead path.

How to ship this week

  1. Write the real chain — landing, signup or pricing, checkout or form, thank-you — as public URLs you can open in a private window.
  2. Paste the landing URL on the home form. No card. Read the three titles.
  3. Unlock the $19 page file when the leak is the URL you landed on. Unlock recaptures. It does not reuse the teaser scrape. Grade later public URLs the same way.
  4. Ship the break — align the button verb with the landed URL. Kill the surprise job on thank-you. Demote a second filled CTA.
  5. Re-audit the same URL from /audits/:id. Empty re-runs burn credits. When to re-audit.

If the leak is only the first viewport, stay on the page file ($19). Do not buy a path you cannot paste.

What this is not

  • Not a ninth landing-page module. Path classes (completeness, promise, destination, friction, competing actions, mobile path) are a second rubric.
  • Not GA4. No drop-off ingest. No logged-in crawl.
  • Not auto-discovered steps. You supply the URLs.
  • Not Ads OAuth or webhooks. Agent API users poll.
  • Not a conversion-rate case study. We do not invent lifts. The sample is illustrative.
